According to official records, The Cochin Club was founded in 1914. Apparently, it began functioning much earlier. The Club's splendid grounds are located on the Arabic seafront, along the entrance to Cochin's harbour. The Club's main gate is opposite to the St. Francis Church, said to be the first Christian Church built in India and its northern neighbour is the historic Bastian Bungalow, the fort residence of the erstwhile Portuguese governors of Fort Cochin. Club remains the green lung of the Fort Cochin heritage zone and is one of its earliest landmarks.
The Club was once the exclusive preserve of British nationals and membership was restricted to persons of British origin. With the Indianisation of British owned mercantile and tea plantation companies, many British nationals returned to England and the Cochin Club Membership became fully Indian
